(Belated) Musings on 14 Months of Maya

Note: Maya turned 14 months on the February 18, but I haven’t been good about blogging so this post is long overdue … forgive me!

I know I’ve said every stage before this has been “the best” but truly this newest stage — 14 months — is “the best” — I love watching her “organize” her toys and books, “clean” (she is obsessed with Swiffing/Swiffering(?)) and figure her toys out — which shapes fit in which objects, stacking blocks instead of just knocking them over.

Thanks to school teaching her baby sign, she signs for “milk” and “all done”, and does the “diaper” sign on command — though we haven’t noticed her doing it otherwise. Continue reading “(Belated) Musings on 14 Months of Maya”

The Big Man Laughed at Me

You might recall my post from yesterday where I asked G-d to please create one more hour in my day (preferably between 5:30-6:30/7 PM) so I could spend more time with Maya.

Well, he clearly heard my plea and had a good laugh at my expense.

Last night, we were up from roughly 2 AM on and off til 4 AM and then again at 6 AM.

Hardy har har, Big Man! We got plenty of time together … just not the kind of time I’d been hoping for!

Have a Little Faith

Motherhood is nothing short of amazing. Every day, literally, Maya is doing something new.

The fact that we’re born with zero capabilities needing every single need met by another and, in time, learn and grow … it’s just baffling. A complete mind-!#@!#.

The first big milestone was smiling at six weeks … cooing … lifting her neck from a laying down position … tracking (i.e., deliberately following with her eyes) …but she was still pretty much just lounging a lot.

Well, she’s been a woman on the move ever since!

Kicking and waving her arms like crazy, pushing off on her legs when we stand her up (she’s totally going to be a soccer player/ballerina ;)) smiling huge grins, turning to our voices, recognizing my husband and I when we come and go, “talking” to us (and we talk back), deliberately sucking her fingers (and putting her fist in her mouth, as in this pic), batting at her toys, starting to touch things, putting her infamous giraffe pacifier (and blankets, her shirt, etc.) into her mouth (i.e., learning cause and effect)… it’s seriously mind-blowing. Talking Chub

Maya was not a preemie, she was just a baby on the smallish side — proportionally small. (See her first bath pic on the right)

Yet often when we’re out and about and people ask how old she is, they’re surprised to find out she’s five weeks and always, always, always comment on what a “peanut” she is and/or ask how much she weighed at birth.

I know they don’t mean anything by it … and it doesn’t particularly bother my husband. But it often makes me feel a bit uncomfortable as the mother, the milk provider, if you will — as though she’s still too tiny for her age.

So we’ve been doing weekly weigh-ins and in the past two weeks, Maya went from 6 lbs 7.5 oz to 7 lbs 2 oz … to 7 lbs 11 oz today (yes, many babies weigh more than that at birth, I know! Meh.)

Anyway, woo hoo: she’s growing! Continue reading “Talking Chub”
