Putting a Name to Face

This weekend I had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful lunch with a super-sweet blog reader, Alison. It felt like I was catching up with an old friend and I had a blast — thanks, Alison, we totally need to do it again soon, on your side of the state 😉

Every time I meet a friend in real life who I got to know in cyberspace or the blogosphere, I’m struck by the (beautiful!) irony of the situation.

Given the sensitive and taboo nature of my blog, it started out as a very anonymous blog … and then in time I got more comfortable with the idea of putting my name/face out there as a voice in recovery. Being so open has worked in my favor. In addition to having the support of my loved ones, now, in the past two years, I was interviewed for Fitness magazine about my exercise addiction history; went to a blogger meet-and-greet; and spoken at the FitBloggin’ conference … all very public “outings.” Continue reading “Putting a Name to Face”

Happy Birthday to Me!

Today I am 31 years old! 30 was an incredible year … between going to visit my brother in Korea, seeing my name in ink in Fitness magazine, speaking at FitBloggin, getting Rocco, watching my husband become a citizen, and discovering I was pregnant …30 was amazing in so many ways.

That said, I’m looking forward to 31 with gusto! 🙂 Continue reading “Happy Birthday to Me!”

Fending Off Negative Feelings

This is a cross-post at WeAretheRealDeal re: Fitbloggin!

What a weekend! MizFit, Marsha, YumYucky and I spoke on a body image panel at Fitbloggin in Baltimore this past weekend.

(Were you there?! If so, let us know — and thank you for coming; it was a blast!!)

Fitbloggin was a fitness/wellness blogger conference organized by Roni, and it was an amazing time!!

Seriously, a wonderful experience and so nice to meet Marsha and YumYucky, and to see MizFit and Roni again (I met them at a blogger meet-up in Chicago in ’08).

Anyway, though we didn’t have a huge turnout at our break-out session (our time slot had us up against book authors) it was an intimate and engaged crowd and an overall awesome experience.

Our topic was body image and blogging: what are we teaching our kids.

But today I’m not here to talk at length about our panel discussion (more on that in another post later). I’m here to talk about the day from a personal perspective and how it relates to our topic. Continue reading “Fending Off Negative Feelings”

Korea in 54 Days!

Fifty-four days from now (Feb 27), my husband and I will board a ginormous 747 jet non-stop from Chicago to Seoul, where we’ll spend a week with my brother in his temporarily-adopted city of Gunsan.

Though we’ve both traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America, neither of us have ever been to Asia — so we’re in for some culture shock, I’m sure!

That said, I couldn’t be more excited to see where my brother is living, teaching English, hanging out. It’ll be the trip of a lifetime and I feel fortunate to be able to do this now, while we’re still (relatively) young and don’t have children yet. Continue reading “Korea in 54 Days!”

FitBloggin’10!

Some of you might recall that I missed participating on BlogHer’s body image panel when I couldn’t get a ticket (WeAretheRealDeal launched following the conference), but I’m going to be part of another body image/blogging panel with MamaV and some others at Roni’s upcoming FitBloggin’10 conference in Baltimore this coming March.

In case you can’t tell, I’m totally stoked!

My best friend lives in Annapolis, and I have lots of friends in the Baltimore/D.C. area, so this will be a great opportunity to “go home” and to do something really phenomenal. Plus, I loathe public speaking, and being part of a panel will force me to get over that fear quickly.

So if you’d like to attend, here’s the info!
