For the past roughly nine months, I’ve been the community manager for the American Heart Association on Facebook and Twitter (I hope you’re a fan/follower!). It’s been among the most gratifying experiences of my career, mostly because I’ve gotten to be the voice of the AHA. I’ve been able to be a cheerleader, a source of knowledge, a supporter, an advocate, an engager … for a cause I care very deeply about.
My ad agency developed the digital strategy, and our main goal was to educate and inform our fans about healthy eating, nutrition, diet and exercise so they could lead (or maintain) a heart-health lifestyle and, in essence, take preventative measures about the #1 killer of women, in particular: heart disease.

Wednesday, April 7, is the American Heart Association’s National Start! Walking Day.
As many of you may know, at work, I’m serving as the community manager for the AHA on Facebook and Twitter, and in a case like this — where my online and offline worlds are inter-meshing so beautifully — I’d be remiss if I didn’t help AHA spread the word to a community of health and wellness friends!!
I’ve organized a lunch-time walk for my office … will you do the same for yours?! Bloggers and those active on Twitter, please help spread the word and thank you in advance!
Now that I’m the community manager for the American Heart Association’s digital engagement strategy, I seem to notice the AHA’s heart check mark everywhere I look — including at the deli.
On my lunch break today, I went to my favorite grocery store in town to pick up my favorite turkey — Boar’s Head Honey Maple Turkey — which meets the AHA’s guidelines and bears the heart check mark.
I buy this about twice a week, in small increments so it stays fresh, and it’s been one of my go-to lunch staples for about the past 5-6 months. Continue reading “Creature of Habit”

As body image advocates, we know that when we take good care of our bodies – in particular, our hearts – we, in turn, feel good about ourselves. It’s a win-win scenario.
