Tipping the Scales

From the title, you probably think I’m referencing weight scales … and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong.

(I haven’t weighed myself since pre-Korea and I can tell you, I’m not feeling great and know it’ll be ugly when I do step on next week at the doctor’s).

But really, I’m talking about equilibriums with respect to health, and how I went from one end of the spectrum — restriction, over-exercising, obsession, avoidance of certain foods — to a much freer end of the spectrum where I am less restrictive, still exercising but not lifting, eating too much … and eating the wrong foods.

Basically, this Libra needs an exercise in BALANCE.

Though I sought a healthy lifestyle, the scales that once tipped in the direction of disordered eating (read as: UNHEALTHY) have now tipped the other way (also read as: UNHEALTHY) — where I’m eating things that just don’t make me feel good.

No one’s force feeding me and I’ve no one to blame but myself.

A Tale of Bloat

Though I’m ashamed to admit it here — and though I loathe the bloated, distended feeling I get after consuming it — I think I have finally concluded why I drink so much Diet Coke:

It fills me when I’m hungry, so I’m not obsessing about food.

Not exactly a healthy mindset, huh?! Sigh … looks like I have a little soul-searching to do. (Hanging head in shame).

I believe in healthy living and clean eating … but am essentially a hypocrite if I’m not living it, myself. Continue reading “A Tale of Bloat”

Shrouding: Disordered or Not?

Heather’s recent post, “Helpful Hint or Disordered Eating” at Hangry Pants really got me thinking …

As Heather notes in her post, “For some time we’ve debated food destruction – ruining your food with something like salt or hot sauce so that it is inedible. Jillian Michaels pours candle wax on her food (thanks for the link Julie) when she is full, and instructs Biggest Loser players to destroy desserts with salt.”

While I think Jillian’s solution is on the extreme side, it saddens me to admit it’s not something I couldn’t have imagined myself doing back in the day of peak disorderedness.

Sad but true.

Food Revolution & The Obesity Crisis in America

I feel like it’s been eons since I wrote a blog post, but last night we caught Jamie Oliver on Campbell Brown on CNN, plugging his new show, Food Revolution and I was fully inspired to write.

Though we didn’t see the actual 2-hour premier (got home too late for that) we saw the segment with the mom from W. Va. who has her fridge/freezer unloaded by Jamie.

Staring at the disgusting-looking pile of junk food and frozen pizzas and chicken nuggets and lord knows what else … he basically tells the mom (who is overweight, if not obese) that eating this way is basically killing her and her children, cutting their lives short by 14 years or so.

When you see the tears start to well up in her face, it’s hard not to be moved to tears yourself. My husband and I just sat there, stunned, looking at the TV. Continue reading “Food Revolution & The Obesity Crisis in America”

“Half-Way” — I’m Really Kind of OK Here …

This weekend I had coffee with a friend  I met via WW Online several years ago.

We’ve become good friends in real life and now that she lives here in the Midwest, we can get together in person more often.

Naturally, the conversation at one point or another turned to food issues and she said something that caught my attention.

First Lady Tackling Childhood Obesity

It’s no secret among those who know me in real life that I’m a liberal Democrat, or that I absolutely adore First Lady Michelle Obama as a career woman, mother, wife, and fitness role model.

She just strikes me as authentic, and authenticity has come to mean a lot to me over the past few years.

Would You Like Fries With That?

One of the first things I banned when I joined Weight Watchers in 2004 was, naturally, fried food.

After all, fried food has zero nutritional value and is a helluva lot of Points for pretty much nada.

Hi, My Name is Pseudo-Sally, in Recovery

Friends and family alike have always teased me about being a picky eater.

Long before my disordered eating issues began, I was a picky eater, often related to my body’s intolerance to certain foods (I have I.B.S. which flares up with creamy foods, tomato-based foods, etc.)

And once I joined Weight Watchers in 2004, and began paying closer attention to what I ate, the I.B.S. flare-ups subsided (although not entirely).
