Holy HUNGER, Batman!!

So a little story to share with you.

Yesterday I snacked a LOT during the day. It was one of those bottomless pit days where it wasn’t mindless eating but rather can’t-get-satisfied-eating. Since I’m journaling from a nutrient standpoint, I also know were I was at calorically and trust me when I say, this mamacita-to-be had eaten plenty … PLENTY ;).

And so it wasn’t surprising when I got home from work and wasn’t hungry. Still, I had some watermelon and a handful of Tostitos simply because my husband was snacking on them and, well, they were there ;). Plus watermelon is my most favorite food in all the world and I can never say no to it. I LIVED off that stuff in El Salvador… memories!

Anyway, we went couch shopping (and got new couches — yea!–they arrive next Sat.!) We didn’t get home til well after 9, and then by the time we took Rocco for his evening walk, it was nearly 10 and any hopes I’d had of squeezing in a gym workout were squashed (it closes at 10). Plus, I was tired and knew I needed rest more than a workout. (huzzah!)

I did a hunger check and surprisingly, even that late at night, I realized I still wasn’t hungry. Totally unlike me.

So I went to bed … and then woke at 12:30 AM with a RAGING hunger. Like Feed-Me-Now-Seymour kind of hunger.

This is nothing like my old days of midnight incidents/waking and eating. This was pure hunger.ย  So I obeyed my hunger. I poured myself a small bowl of the new FiberPlus cinnamon oats cereal and skim milk, and went to sleep happy — belly full.

So you can imagine my surprise when I woke this morning once again starving!!

I’m thinking it has to be that second trimester increase in appetite or something, because this is brand new territory for me. I’m also wondering if maybe I had front-loaded my intake too much during the day and that’s why I wasn’t hungry at night? It’s hard to say. Maybe I need to do a better job of spacing things out … or just accept that 12:30 a.m. was when I got hungry!

Either way, I’m glad I listened to my body and obeyed my hunger, as it was genuine hunger and not “oooh, that looks good” kind of hunger.

Apparently my body knew what it needed!! I have to say I definitely am feeling more and more in tune with my physical self. Imagine that?!

How about you? Do you experience ebbs and flows to your own hunger levels? Do you listen to it?

  1. I went through the same thing – I was a bottomless pit for the first 20 weeks! I had to consume something — nuts, fruit, etc — every HOUR at some points. Despite the constant snacking, I also woke up in the middle of the night for crackers, and my DH would still have to wake up to make me toast in the AM so I wouldn’t get nauseated.

I once read a statistic that a pregnant body burns more calories at rest than a man working out… makes sense, given how hungry we get!!!

    1. This is the first time I’m experiencing this–so it does make sense. Baby-growing is hard work ๐Ÿ˜‰ I heart your DH ๐Ÿ™‚ I only felt nauseated/had-to-snack on pretzels or something for a week or so … otherwise, no nausea … but today again SUPER hungry!!!

      That stat TOTALLY makes sense!
