The Shred/P90X/Etc.

Random post, but has anyone tried Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred? What about P90X, which has taken the infomercial world by storm?

I just ordered the Shred, and it should arrive Monday. Very excited to try it; I hear it’s a killer and I’ve never done a fitness DVD. I’m such a total gym rat, but think it’d be awesome to have the ability to work out from home every now and then.

And, I’ve heard soooo much hype about P90X and was kind of curious about it — it’s a 90 day program, an hour a day, and it’s supposed to be killer. I like the idea of muscle confusion; it sounds logical. And for such a creature of habit, it’d be a good mix-up for me. Some male friends have done it and they post alllllllllllllll about it on Facebook.

So I figured I’d ask if anyone has had first-hand experience with either of these programs? I still have some fitness reimbursement funds I can use, and am considering getting P90X.

  1. I just ordered the Shred too! It arrived about three days ago but I’ve been too scared to take it out of the package. 🙂

    Right now I’m doing the couch-to-5k training and am pretty determined to get through that, so I probably won’t actually do Jillian for another while. But I am looking forward to it.

    I did P90 like SIX years ago, and it was pretty good but of COURSE I did not stick with it. I am a pretty social animal and generally need other people to keep going.

  2. I am doing the Shred and think it is great! It’s a quick workout that targets a lot of your body and gets you pumped up.

    My husband has been borrowing P90X from a friend to try and he REALLY likes it. It looks more intense and more focused than the Shred. We may end up buying that as well. I think it will yield more results in the long run.

I’ve been doing Shred 3-4 times a week since the middle of January in the mornings while still going to the gym in the evenings (also 3-4 times a week) and it was the little extra kick I needed to get me back on target. I completed the levels in order and only moved up a level when I could successully complete a level without any modifications. I now swtich between the levels and use heavier weights now then when I started. I’ve lost a couple of pounds and all my clothes are fitting better and I just feel leaner and stronger. I too have thought about trying p90x but am not sure if I want to do a daily hour workout. I like how I can sneak it Shred in about a 1/2 hour.

  4. Foody, I thought P90X was new — I guess just the annoying infomericals are 😉 Thanks, Kilax — I hope I like it. I am very seriously considering ordering P90X too … a girlfriend just started it and likes it. And I can do it at home!

    Jody, how many sets of weights did you need? I only have 8s at home. Congrats on losing some lbs. And an hour commitment for me is less time than I’m usually at the gym, so I’d welcome it. Esp. since I don’t know how effective my trainer’s plan will be for me. I’d rather do that at home and do cardio at the gym; we’ll see.

    I have the Shred and really like it. You won’t burn the calories like you’re accustomed to burning but I think in addition to another routine you’d see major results.

    I am still on the fence about P90X. I’ve heard it’s so hard that I’m almost scared to try it.

  6. I love Shredding! I bought it about a month ago and do it 3-4 times a week. Yeah, it gets a little old, but it is really intense! Like you, I love and prefer the gym (or outside), but what I love about this is that if I’m crunched for time I can still get in a good workout in 20 minutes (now who sounds like an infomercial?). 🙂

    You will have to let us know what you think of P90X! I’m curious about that, too.

  7. I did!! I didn’t know you had the Shred, Staci, I thought you had one of her other ones, but I hear it’s kick-ass!! And I’ll continue my cardio. Once I get P90X, I might nix the strength work at the gym since that will be a whole hour. I’ll let you know what I think about it; no promises I will like it, but I’ve heard enough about it (I have some male friends OBSESSED with it, in particular, and some female friends who dig it too).

  8. You only need 1 set of weights for Shred. In the DVD they never tell you what weight they are using so I figure they probably only use 3 or 5 lbs. I started doing it with 5s and now I use my 8s. I work out at the gym with the husband where we always start with 20 minutes of cardio then do strength training which I love. It’s great quality time together and I’m definitely stronger from it. By adding in Shred I’m getting additional strength with cardio.

  9. I have the Shred and husband and I bought p90x a couple years ago. I LOVE the shred workouts because they’re only 20 minutes but I really feel like I got a good workout. I did the Shred 4x a week for about 3 months before my wedding last fall and I really noticed a difference.

    I never made it through p90x…an hour+ a day was just too much for me at the time. Some days are around 50 minutes, some are 75 minutes and the yoga is 90 minutes. I keep thinking I want to try it again though. I enjoyed the workouts and I felt like I really was getting stronger.

    PS The husband never made it through more than 2 days of p90x.

    I usually do 50-90 min a day (on a lifting day, it’s more like 90; cardio usually 50-70) so for me, the timing isn’t so crucial — that said, I haven’t TRIED it yet 😉 We’ll see!! LOL about the hubby!

  11. Hey! I am late to this party, but I wanted to comment. I have had the great fortune to get to meet Jillian and work with her briefly. My goals were never weight loss, but more muscle building and being fit and tone. Jillian turned me on to P90X and it has worked WONDERS! P90X is 12 dvd workouts over 90 days where Shred is a single dvd. I also have some of Jillians other dvds that I really dig! To be honest, I like her cardio MUCH better than the cardio included in P90X so on the days I am suposed to do cardio, i just use Jillians dvds. When I tell people I do P90X and 30 Day Shred at the same time they think I am nuts, but they are two very different programs. Tony Horton is the guy who does P90X and Jillian has said on her old radio show that she viewed him as a mentor.
